Susanne Schindler

Susanne Schindler is an architect and historian focused on the intersection of policy and design in housing. She is currently working on her book manuscript, The Housing that Model Cities Built: Context, Community, and Capital in New York City, 1966–76.

Prior to MIT, Susanne taught at RWTH Aachen University, Parsons The New School, Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and CUNY Hunter College.

Since 2019, Susanne has been co-directing the MAS program in the History and Theory of Architecture at ETH Zurich. Together with Anne Kockelkorn, she is leading the research and exhibition project Cooperative Conditions: A Primer on Architecture, Finance and Regulation. In the summer of 2020, she led a related workshop on the prospects of Zurich-style cooperative housing in Boston at MIT.

In the academic year 2019-20, Susanne was co-initiator and member of the research group "Re-theorizing the Architecture of Housing as Grounds for Research and Practice" at IIAS Jerusalem. From 2013 to 2016, she was lead researcher and co-curator of the research and exhibition project House Housing: An Untimely History of Architecture and Real Estate at Columbia’s Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture, and co-author of the related book The Art of Inequality: Architecture, Housing, and Real Estate—A Provisional Report.

Susanne writes regularly for a range of publications, most recently for Footprint, e-flux, Perspecta, Planning Perspectives, and Urban Omnibus. From 2010 to 2015, she was founding co-editor of the peer-reviewed Candide—Journal for Architectural Knowledge.
